Physical Education

We decided to post on this because it's hard to find out what others do for regular exercise. Our kids are naturally bookworms and computer kids, so it does take a little planning to make sure they are active.

Daily to Weekly Activities

We insist on regular exercise each day, and this was easiest to schedule into their routine with our rowing machine which could also log time. Depending on the weather, we have the kids walk, run, or bike the track in back of our house. Other times we head  to the YMCA or local city pool.

Our daughter has recently joined the First Tee program, and this seems terrific. It's a very affordable golf program for kids that emphasis character development, golf etiquette, and lets them play. We also found that many public golf courses have putting and chipping areas that can be used for free. Apparently after kids get certified with First Tee, they're eligible for reduced green fees at certain courses.

One computer-based source of physical activity is Dance, Dance, Revolution. That game is a hoot! An electronic pad is plugged into the GameCube, and kids dance along with to match directions projected on the screen. We found this to be a good cooperative game, too, because our kids got their highest score with our son dancing while our daughter sings. For the singing part, you sing karaoke style into microphone while notes and an indicator of your pitch flashes on the screen.

Every Now and Then

Every now and then, we hike - summertime in the Pacific Northwest is wonderful for this- and play tennis at a local high schools' courts.
