Moral Education

Education Through Example

Moral education always begins at home with modeling and teaching. Some children are more empathetic and sensitive than others, and others may need more specific teaching and reminders.

For children as well as many adults, the principles of fairness and right and wrong are more easily understood than when emotions are not flared, and when direct conflicts of interest are felt.

We found that reading books and doing the family activities in books like Teaching Your Children Sensitivity, had a wonderful effect on all of us. We also read excerpts from Christian Acts of Kindness and Kids Random Acts of Kindness.

For younger kids, basic books like Aliki's Feelings might be helpful.

Biographies and historical fiction may another source of moral learning. Also workbook-style practice or games can be done at home with materials from linguisystems.com.

Sometimes young boys are less interested in social issues than girls. If this is so, then considerate behavior may just need to be learned as a habit first, realizing that it may not be felt from the heart until later.
